"The Kentauride" // Hand Painted Embroidered Cloth Doll

"How beautiful the Centaurides are, even where they are horses; for some grow out of white mares, others are attached to chestnut mares, and the coats of others are dappled, but they glisten like those of horses that are well cared for. There is also a white female Centaur that grows out of a black mare, and the very opposition of the colours helps to produce the united beauty of the whole."
-Philostratus the Elder

Little is known of the female centaurs, as they are seldom mentioned in the writings of early antiquity. The most well-known of them is Hylonome, who, despairing at her husband's head at the battle between the centaurs and Lapiths, takes her own life. This particular centauress is a brave hunter, relishing the thrill of the chase. She carries a bow and a quiver of arrows, her dark hair streaming out behind her as she tries to keep up with her quarry. She would be a wonderful gift for the mythology-lover in your life, or a beautiful addition to a classroom Greek and Roman mythology unit.

  • Centaur is hand drawn with free-motion machine embroidery on cotton muslin.
  • She is shaded with vibrant permanent fabric dyes, heat set so they they will not fade or or rub out.
  • Her face is carefully embroidered with cotton floss
  • She is stuffed with organic cotton fiber and backed with soft wool felt in sage green.

Centaur is 8" tall and about 10" long.
